Learn how to dispose of EpiPens safely in the UK, including the needle, injector pen and sharps bin rules that prevent injury and protect waste workers.
EpiPen Disposal Done Right
Many people assume that because the EpiPen needle retracts after use, it can go in regular household waste. This is incorrect and potentially dangerous.
Why EpiPens Need Sharps Disposal
The retracted needle is still present inside the device. If the casing is damaged during waste processing, the needle can cause injury. Additionally, residual medication may remain in the pen.
How to Dispose of Used EpiPens
- Do NOT remove the orange tip or attempt to disassemble
- Place the entire used EpiPen in a sharps bin
- If you do not have a sharps bin, take it to your nearest pharmacy
- Never put EpiPens in household recycling
Getting a Sharps Bin
If you carry an EpiPen, ask your GP for a small travel sharps container. These fit easily in a bag or glove compartment.
